I was 25 when I met April. She was the sister of Glenn Edwards who was heavily involved in the 1320 Drag racing club. She was 15.

Over the next few years we started going out and I asked her to marry me while I was in Germany for the 1972 Paralympic Games. She was 18 and I was 28. We got married in 1972.

Above Right: There's something you don't ever see much of me doing. Actually smiling.

We went down South for our Honeymoon and then to Geraldton where I hoped to be able to get a job as Radio Announcer at the local station. We stayed with one of my Uncles and Aunties for a month but I didn't get the job so we came back to Perth.

After meeting with one of the bosses from 6PM a Perth Radio station who also owned the Geraldton station and 6MM in Northam he agreed to give me a trial at 6MM on a morning shift.

April was an important part of the package as she put her hand up to take on the copywriting for adds and any other off air work if I was unable to for any reason. As it turned out I was unwell for a good part of the first year and had to come down to Perth while she stayed in Northam and literally did my work.

It is painful for me to remember and write about my relationship with April because we had a lot of fun in the early days and she was so loving and committed to me yet I eventually did what I have always done in my relationships and drove her away.

April and I have been talking about this (January 2010 - February 2011) and I want to add some bits in here but need to think of the right words other than to say I was an absolute bastard to her in the latter part of our marriage until she eventually had had enough and we had an amicable divorce in 1978.

The fact that we can still chat after what I put her through speaks volumes about her. While she now lives over east we continue to be in touch and have a nice comfortable relationship.

She has been married to another 'John' for 15 years and I wish her all the happiness that I denied her because she still has a special place in my heart.
