It was pure ass that I got the radio job at 6AM in Northam. It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time and it was a job I was to keep for the next 15 years.

I am not sure how it happened exactly but from memory I was visiting the Quadriplegic Centre for some reason and a phone call came through from  Peter Barlow who was the news reader at Channel 9 in Perth. He had gone through an operation that could have left him in a wheelchair and had made a promise to himself that if he came through it alright he would teach someone in a wheelchair to become a TV newsreader.

Because I was at the right spot at the right time I happened to be that someone and he spent the next 12 months teaching me the ropes after he read the news of a Friday night. Somewhere along the line he suggested that I might prefer Radio and I agreed as you could dress how you liked in Radio and not the hated suit and tie.

I used to love good clothes but since my accident I don't like clothing touching my skin so I even wear a t-shirt under sufferance.
